Wealthy Affiliate Review (2022) – The TRUTH About This Platform

Thanks to the evolution of the Internet, it has never been easier for people to make their own money and enjoy their own freedom without being tied to a traditional job.

Decades ago, starting a business often required a tremendous amount of upfront capital, and it certainly wasn’t for the faint of heart. Many people would take out big loans to finance their startup.

Times are different now. You can work online and make passive income without investing tens of thousands of dollars or slaving away 8+ hours a day. One of the best ways to do this is through affiliate marketing.

Every smart brand has an affiliate program for their products — these programs can generate 15-30% more revenue. In fact, many of the biggest companies in the world have affiliate programs, and some, such as Trivago, rely on affiliate marketing as a primary revenue stream.

There are certainly a lot of programs and courses out there that claim to teach you how to prosper with affiliate marketing. Wealthy Affiliate is one of them.

I was once a member of Wealthy Affiliate. It was one of the first programs I stumbled upon when I started my online money-making journey.

As someone who spent more than a year on their platform, I want to write an honest, comprehensive review of it so you can answer these questions for yourself:

How can Wealthy Affiliate help me make a full-time income online?

Is it a good program? Is it worth the investment?

What is Wealthy Affiliate?

Since you’re reading this review, you probably already have a pretty good idea of what Wealthy Affiliate is. Wealthy Affiliate describes itself as “a platform designed for affiliate marketers of all levels”.

It’s a platform focused on affiliate marketing, which is selling other people’s products for a commission. In particular, it focuses on building niche websites that attract organic search engine traffic.

Wealthy Affiliate promotes the idea that you can turn any hobby or topic that you’re passionate about into a profit-pulling website, without knowing anything about web design.

The platform was founded in 2005 by two Canadian marketers named Kyle and Carson, and since then, it has served over one million members.

Here are some Wealthy Affiliate stats (at the time of writing):

• the user base spans over 193 countries
• over 10,000 new businesses are built every month on the platform
• over 1800 expert coaches are on the platform
• over 23,000 people are helped daily

There are four main components/features of the Wealthy Affiliate Platform:

1. Training

The meat of WA is a step-by-step training course that teaches you how to start from zero and create a long-term, successful online business.

Within the platform, there are two main training courses: the Online Entrepreneur Certification and the Affiliate Bootcamp.

Online Entrepreneur Certification

This course teaches you how to start and make money with a website in any niche you want. It consists of 5 sections and 50 lessons in total:

1. Getting Started: Learn everything you need to know before creating your business.
2. Building Your Website: Choose a domain, set up your site, and understand keywords and content creation.
3. Making Money: Learn how to take advantage of affiliate programs.
4. Social Engagement: Learn about website comment sections and how to leverage social media.
5. Content Creation: Learn about creating content that ranks and converts.

The course is task-based, and each lesson has a comment section for discussion.

Affiliate Bootcamp

This course teaches you how to establish a business that promotes the Wealthy Affiliate platform. It consists of 7 sections and 70 lessons in total.

Some of the things you learn in the course are:

• creating a website in the MMO niche
• creating content based around keywords
• giving your site social value
• creating successful PPC campaigns and scaling them

In contrast with the Online Entrepreneur Certficiation, the Affiliate Bootcamp works within the business opportunity (MMO) niche.

There is also a Training HQ section that contains additional courses, including those from community members.

2. SiteRubix Hosting

Wealthy Affiliate offers a website platform called SiteRubix, which allows you to create a WordPress website on a free subdomain. There are over 3000 design templates to choose from.

SiteRubix has various integrated tools, security features, and offers benefits like daily backups and malware busting.

Wealthy Affiliate offers website hosting through SiteRubix. You can use up to 25 unique domains and 25 free websites. Features include:

• fast loading of around 1-2 seconds
• double hosting (mirrored) so that your site is always online
• backups every 24 hours

You certainly don’t need to use SiteRubix to host your website, but it’s convenient if you’re a member of WA. Our web host of choice is SiteGround.

3. Jaaxy

Jaaxy is the companion keyword research tool of Wealthy Affiliate.

Branded as “the only keyword and research platform that was developed by affiliate marketers for affiliate marketers“, it allows you to find keyword traffic data, uncover new niches, and spy on the competition.

You can also use Jaaxy to monitor your keyword rankings and uncover valuable domain names.

Jaaxy is a separate service, and to use it effectively, you’ll need to pay a monthly subscription fee.

4. Community & Support

One of the biggest selling points of Wealthy Affiliate aside from the training is the community.

It is claimed to be the largest internet marketing community in the world, and that’s debatable, but it’s still has hundreds of thousands of people, including teachers, successful marketers, and founders Kyle & Carson themselves.

In addition to being able to read and interact with the blog posts and threads of other people in the community, you can ask your own questions and make your own posts.

There is a community live chat which you can jump in at any time — Kyle and Carson often spend time in the chat helping people out. You can also send private messages to anyone on the WA platform.

All in all, the community is a great place to help, receive help, and network with other marketers working on their businesses.

If you’re having technical issues with your website, you can contact tech support as long as you’re using SiteRubix hosting.

There are other useful features that I haven’t yet discussed including a comment exchange system, site feedback system, and live events.

Wealthy Affiliate Results

Regardless of the conclusions that I draw in this review, Wealthy Affiliate is not a scam. Thousands of people have built full-time incomes by applying the concepts taught inside the platform.

New success stories continue to be posted on a regular basis. If you end up signing up for Wealthy Affiliate, you’ll see plenty of them in the community discussion and blog sections.

Notable cases are a guy called Nathaniell, who was able to quit his day job and earn a full-time living online, and AlexSol, who joined WA in 2007. You can find their stories and stories similar to them online, if you so desire.

I myself continue to make good money from a website that I started on Wealthy Affiliate.

Affiliate Program

Many Wealthy Affiliate members make a good income from the platform’s affiliate program, which has an average commission of $118 and which has paid more than $1 million to affiliates to date.

The downside is that you have to be a paying member to be able to access the affiliate program. This means that if you like the platform but cancelled your membership at some point, you’re out of luck.

A Quick Tour Of Wealthy Affiliate

Now I’ll give you a quick tour of the members area of Wealthy Affiliate, showing you what you can find inside.

Once you create your account, the first thing you’ll see is a welcome popup.

At this point, you can take a quick tour of the platform and get an idea of what you should do next.

Eventually, you’ll get a popup that encourages you to fill out your profile: photo, description, goals, et cetera. This is optional and not needed to benefit from the training.

Once you get rid of all the popups, you’ll see the home screen.

There are a lot of things going on here. Let’s go through them one at a time:

Top Menu

First, you can ask questions and search for any information currently in the WA system using the search bar. To the right, you can:

• do things like write blog posts, create training, and build a website.
• spend credits (earned through several means) on various benefits.
• access all things related to the Wealthy Affiliate affiliate program.
• access your notifications
• access your message center

If you’re not yet a Premium member, you’ll likely see a coloured banner at the top that has links to where you can upgrade.

Next, there is a section at the top where you can get in touch with Kyle and fill out your profile.

Main Section

Near the center is a shortcut to access the training, slideshow of new Premium members, and a long-form display of the latest posts by members of the community.

On the right is the live chat roll, available to all WA members, which you can jump into at any time.

Left Menu

On the left side is a menu where you can access your profile, the training, website features, live events, and a few other features.

Profile

By clicking on your avatar, you can access things like your blog, profile settings, account settings, and credit dashboard.

Underneath this, you can view your current rank in the community, number of posts, and the size of your network. You can find information on what rank is within the platform.

Training

From the Training window, you can access both of the main courses (OEC and Affiliate Bootcamp) and all of the Phases within them.

You can also access the Training HQ, which contains all kinds of trainings and tutorials from WA coaches and community members. Lastly, you can access Classrooms, which consist of videos, courses, tutorials and webinars.

Websites

From the Websites window, you can build and manage your websites, manage your domains, and utilize the SiteContent writing platform (not necessary, honestly).

There are three additional Premium features in this section: SiteComments, SiteFeedback, and SiteSupport.

The most useful of these, in my opinion, is SiteComments, where you can get free comments and social engagement on your website articles. This not only pads your website with additional content and can help it to rank, but it also adds social validation and trust to your site.

Other items in the left menu are:

• Live Events, where you can sign up for upcoming webinars, mostly run by a guy named Jay.
• Research, where you can use the Jaaxy keyword tool.
• a place where you can search for affiliate programs in different niches.
• access to live chat.
• the Help Center, where you can contact tech support, ask a question to the community, and send private messages to individuals.

That pretty much sums it up. From the home screen, you can access every page and feature available in Wealthy Affiliate.

What I Like About Wealthy Affiliate

Here are what I believe are the greatest strengths of the Wealthy Affiliate platform:

1. The core training works, if you put in the work.

Wealthy Affiliate teaches you how to create and grow money-making niche websites.

Whether or not I like the way the material is taught is another story, but there’s no doubt that this business model works — it has worked for a long time and will continue to work in the future.

In fact, I think it’s one of the best online businesses that anyone can get into, regardless of whether or not you have a previous education in business. It’s a business that I’m very much chest-deep in myself.

With that said, it doesn’t yield results overnight. It requires consistent effort over a period of time, and many people can’t or aren’t willing to put in that effort.

2. The community is large and can be very helpful.

Wealthy Affiliate claims to be home to the largest internet marketing community in the world. I don’t know if that’s true or not, since there are other huge communities out there including the Warrior Forum and BHW.

But it is true that WA has a very large community, with thousands of people.

There are always people talking in the live chat, writing articles, blog posts and trainings, and helping other people with their issues. Founders Kyle & Carson (who are very successful) stay active within the community as well.

If you’re stuck or have a question about anything related to online marketing, you’re almost certain to get the help you need. You can also make friends and build connections on WA.

3. It has some unique features like a site comment system.

Wealthy Affiliate has some features that I found very useful when I was a Premium member there.

The most notable one is a system called SiteComments. Here, you can spend credits to have others in the community leave comments on your website blog posts.

Credits can be purchased with real money, but I found the best way to get credits was to leave comments on other people’s blog posts (pay-it-forward). This effectively allows you to get comments on your posts for free, from real people with real avatars.

As I mentioned earlier in the review, it’s great to add quality comments to your site because it acts as additional content and builds more trust.

Wealthy Affiliate also has systems called SiteFeedback (get feedback on your websites) and SiteContent (content creation management), but they aren’t as useful in my opinion.

What I Don’t Like About Wealthy Affiliate

I have a lot to say here, so buckle in…

1. The community can sometimes do more harm than good.

There are two different elements to this.

1. Bad Advice

Firstly, you might think that the greater the size and activity of the community, the better. And in a certain sense, that’s definitely true.

But the problem with absolutely everyone being able to give advice, create training, and answer other people’s questions is that, in many cases, people give bad advice.

Let’s be honest: while the intentions of most of the people on WA are good, many of them don’t really know what they’re talking about. And one of the worst things for your online success is getting bad guidance that sends you down the wrong path.

What you need is help from people who have experience in internet marketing and who have been successful in making money. If you’re relying on advice from some bloke who’s in the same stage in their online journey, you’re likely setting yourself up for a lot of wasted time and failure.

This is why, if you want to get some help or advice on Wealthy Affiliate, you should try to reach out to members who you know are successful like Kyle, Carson, Jay, or others.

2. The Distraction Effect

Wealthy Affiliate encourages you at every opportunity to get involved in the community, posting in threads, writing posts, et cetera. They have a system where you can become a “Wealthy Affiliate Ambassador” and move up the ranks, earning you recognition in the community.

On the surface, this may seem like a great idea: who doesn’t want a cool title and prominence within a community?

The problem with this is that it’s a big distraction from what you should be doing, and that’s working on your business. Think about it: instead of spending a couple of hours “being active” in the community, you could be using that time to build out your website.

Building a successful business is your #1 priority; that’s why you’re here in the first place. “Being active” in the community will not help you make money and achieve your goals.

Now, if you want to spend the time that you would normally use for leisure on Wealthy Affiliate, that’s perfectly fine (I wouldn’t do that myself, but to each their own). But never substitute working on your business for “hanging out” on the platform.

If you contribute to the community as much as WA wants you to, you’re not spending enough time on your business. So unless socialness is more important to you, keep the participation to a minimum.

2. I don’t really like the style of the training.

I’m not saying the concepts aren’t valuable — I’m just not crazy about the way it’s taught.

Kyle is a good guy and is easy to understand, but I find that himself and a few other prominent training creators within Wealthy Affiliate give you a lot of BS motivation that just isn’t necessary.

I like teachers who get into the nitty-gritty quickly (like Frank Hatchett, for example) and don’t talk to you like you’re dumb.

Wealthy Affiliate spends too much time distracting you with things like community involvement and promoting their own platform, instead of equipping you with the business tools and knowledge you need in the best possible way.

3. It’s usually not worth the monthly membership fee.

Once you take the training courses, you’re still paying $49/month to be a part of the platform. It’s not a huge subscription fee, but unless you are very active within the community and/or are promoting the platform as an affiliate, this cost doesn’t seem justified.

I know that when I was a member, I took the training and found that I wasn’t using the platform much at all after that. I was too busy working on my websites to be active within the community.

The only feature I continued to use was SiteComments, but even this isn’t completely necessary since people can leave their own comments on articles.

Affiliate Hook

This leads me to another issue with Wealthy Affiliate: you have to be a paying member to promote the platform as an affiliate.

I don’t like tools and platforms that force you to do this. Most of the best affiliate programs out there don’t.

I get the idea that you should be familiar with a product or service before you promote it. However, there are people that were once members, weren’t able to continue their membership for whatever reason, but still like the platform and would like to promote it — these people are out of luck.

This is an insidious way for Wealthy Affiliate to get people to stay as paying members. They teach you how to promote their platform as an affiliate, but to do that, you need to remain a member.

There’s no other reason they would have this requirement, since anyone can bring them sales regardless of whether or not they’re a Premium member. They would just need to have good affiliate terms in place and remove affiliates who break the rules.

Hosting Hook

You also need to be a member of Wealthy Affiliate to use their hosting.

This makes sense, but the issue is that most people who go through their training build their sites on this hosting infrastructure.

They become dependent on it, and many people stay on as members simply because their websites are hosted there and they don’t want to go through the trouble of moving to another host.

In my experience, WA hosting is quite good, but the reality is that you can get hosting that is just as good or better for a much lower price.

The bottom line is that while Wealthy Affiliate teaches you how to build a successful online business, they also teach you how to be dependent on the platform so that you keep paying the membership fee.

Your goal should be to be independent, so you can make money online with any tool or platform for years and years to come. Understanding this was what ultimately led me to cancel my membership a while back.

4. Support can be questionable.

I’m not talking about the community here; I’m talking about general WA support and hosting tech support.

When I was a member, I had some difficulties with tech support, which I didn’t find to be very helpful. But beyond that is something that happened to me recently.

A few weeks ago, I got an alert message from Kyle’s email at Wealthy Affiliate. It said that my websites were offline, my Premium membership had elapsed, and that I could bring my websites back up and running by resubscribing.

I have long since moved the sites that I had on there to another host, and I have no plans to resubscribe, so there was no issue. I just let the email be.

Then I got the exact same email the next day, and the day after. I tried adjusting my email preferences, but it didn’t work; I continued to get the same website notice every single day. At that point, it had become unwanted spam.

I got in touch with Wealthy Affiliate support to explain the situation and ask them to stop sending me these automated messages. They responded saying I could adjust my email preferences using the link in the footer.

I told them that this doesn’t work, and after sending three more follow-up emails, they have yet to get back to me.

So basically, I have Wealthy Affiliate sending me spam emails every day, and support is ignoring my inquiries about it. I now have to block the sender address and filter the emails to go straight to the trash.

I have lost some respect for Wealthy Affiliate after this ordeal. It should not be so difficult to get customer support to address my problem, and they should not be sending the same email to people’s inboxes every single day in perpetuity. I imagine they could get into legal trouble for this.

In general, don’t expect to get top-quality support from the team at Wealthy Affiliate.

5. Some of the content is outdated.

Some of the training content on Wealthy Affiliate was written many years ago and is now obsolete.

For example, at least one lesson refers to 2017 as the upcoming year, and another lesson talks about Google Plus, which no longer exists.

A lot of other training, tutorials, and other content on Wealthy Affiliate is outdated and in need of updating.

Wealthy Affiliate Pricing

Wealthy Affiliate offers two plans: Starter and Premium.

Starter Plan

The Starter Plan is essentially a free 7-day trial to Wealthy Affiliate, but the features are very limited.

You can interact with the community, get limited hosting capabilities on the SiteRubix platform with a subdomain only, and access only the first part of the main training course.

You can’t do much more than this. After 7 days, you can no longer interact with the community. You won’t be able to take the full training at any point.

You can’t complain about this because the plan is free, but it’s pretty useless in the long term. The Starter Plan is mainly meant to get you acquainted with WA and get your feet wet.

Premium Plan

This is the plan that you’ll get pushed to upgrade to at every opportunity within Wealthy Affiliate.

It costs $49/month and unlocks all features and benefits. This includes:

• unlimited access to the community
• full hosting support and infrastructure
• full access to the main training courses plus all other trainings created on the platform
• full access to the affiliate program
• keyword and website features

You’re not really considered a “member” of Wealthy Affiliate until you subscribe to the Premium Plan.

Wealthy Affiliate has also been known to offer yearly packages (Black Friday, etc.) for Premium at a reduced monthly cost.

What I Recommend

Which Wealthy Affiliate plan would I recommend to you?

Well, I actually wouldn’t recommend Wealthy Affiliate in the first place, but as I mentioned above, the Starter Plan is pretty useless for being able to benefit from the training and put it into action.

You can’t take most of the training, you can’t interact with the community, and most things you click on will take you to the payment page for Premium.

If you want to be a part of Wealthy Affiliate, you’ll pretty much need to become a Premium member at some point. And that’s by design — look at the features offered for each plan and you’ll understand what I mean.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Wealthy Affiliate available in my country?

Many people want to know if Wealthy Affiliate is available in countries like Nigeria and the Philippines.

The platform is available in most countries (the user base spans over 192 countries). To check, go to the payment page for Premium and click on the country drop-down under Billing address.

If your country is there, you should be able to subscribe without issues. At the time of writing, Nigeria and the Philippines are on the list.

If you run into issues, contact support and see if you can get them ironed out.

How does Wealthy Affiliate work?

Wealthy Affiliate is an affiliate marketing platform, and although the community is a large part of it, the key feature is the training.

Your main focus should be to take the main training course (one or both) and start building out your website as soon as possible.

You should probably fill out your profile, but I don’t recommend spending much time at all being active in the community, at least when you’re starting out. After all, how can you help people or contribute when you’re just getting started?

As a Premium member, you can take full advantage of SiteRubix hosting and features such as SiteComments. Go through all of the training (taking other training courses is entirely optional) and take consistent action.

As you gain knowledge and experience, you can start to participate in the community more. How long you want to continue your membership after you take the main training is up to you.

Is Wealthy Affiliate a scam or a pyramid scheme?

I may criticize Wealthy Affiliate a lot, but it’s not a scam. It’s a complete affiliate marking platform that delivers the features it claims to offer, namely training that works and a real community.

Whether or not it’s worth the monthly membership fee is a whole other matter, but consider the fact that they’ve been in business for over 14 years and have thousands of members that have enjoyed real results.

Is the Wealthy Affiliate affiliate program free?

No, it’s not. In order to be paid commissions, you need to be a Premium member, which costs $49/month. I talk more about what I don’t like about this here.

How does Wealthy Affiliate compare with Builderall?

Wealthy Affiliate and Builderall are fundamentally two different things.

Builderall was founded in 2011 by Brazilian entrepreneur Erick Salgado. Unlike Wealthy Affiliate, which is primarily a training platform and community for affiliate marketers, Builderall is a software platform that allows you to build sales funnels.

Builderall is considered an “all-in-one” business solution that provides all of the tools a business needs to sell their products online. Those looking to build blog-style niche websites that make money through affiliate marketing have little to no need for Builderall.

As far as funnel-building software goes, I wouldn’t even recommend Builderall — what you’d want to look at is ClickFunnels. If you want to learn more about Builderall, read my review.

Does Wealthy Affiliate cover dropshipping?

Not really. The main focus of Wealthy Affiliate is affiliate marketing and niche websites, and that’s what the main training courses are about.

You can find some community content about dropshipping in Training HQ, as well as some blog posts about it, but that’s as far as it goes.

If you’re interested in dropshipping and ecommerce, Wealthy Affiliate is definitely not the right platform for you. Instead, you should check out a program called Ecom Elites.

An Alternative Program

You probably can tell by now that I’m not exactly giving Wealthy Affiliate a glowing recommendation.

It has some very good things to offer, but at the end of the day, it has some pretty big problems that not only hold it back as an online marketing platform, but will hold you back as a self-employed internet marketer.

In fact, I wouldn’t recommend you bother with Wealthy Affiliate at all. I was a member for quite a long time, but if I knew then what I know now, I would have seriously thought twice about becoming a Premium member.

When it comes to the education you need to succeed with affiliate marketing and online marketing in general, there are better options out there — options that will have a much lesser impact on your wallet in the long term.

One such option that I want to to recommend to you right now is a training program called Savage Affiliates.

Why I Recommend Savage Affiliates

First off, what is Savage Affiliates? It’s a full affiliate marketing course created by 7-figure marketer Franklin Hatchett that walks you through everything you need to know to make a full-time income online.

Frank teaches you how to build an affiliate marketing business from the ground up, with methods that he has used himself to achieve amazing results.

In addition to this, you get full access to a private Facebook group where you can share results, ask questions, and help others. This community consists of Savage Affiliates customers and Frank himself, who you can talk to one-on-one.

The course contains 10 video modules, each with 5-20 videos walking you through every step of the process. It’s better than Wealthy Affiliate because:

1. It teaches you way more.

Wealthy Affiliate almost exclusively focuses on one method of affiliate marketing: building niche websites and creating content for them.

Building websites that get organic traffic is great, but it’s not the be-all and end-all of affiliate marketing.

Savage Affiliates gives you a much bigger picture. Not only does it walk you through website and content creation, but it also goes in-depth into:

• email marketing
• the best places to find digital and physical products
• how to build backlinks to improve your search engine rankings
• sending paid traffic (Facebook Ads, Google Ads, etc.) to funnels and landing pages
• using other free traffic sources aside from search engines, including YouTube and Quora

Savage Affiliates teaches you many different business models under the umbrella of affiliate marketing. This allows you to choose a method that you like the most.

In contrast, the main training of Wealthy Affiliate is very narrow in its scope, which doesn’t give you a lot of flexibility in what you do.

2. It offers the main benefits of WA at a much lower cost.

Wealthy Affiliate wants you to be a Premium member for years. At $49/month or around $500/year if you subscribe to an annual plan, that means that you’ll ultimately spend thousands of dollars on the platform after taking a relatively short training course. You may even spend more if you decide to use their keyword tool Jaaxy.

With Savage Affiliates, you get some of the best affiliate marketing training online and a private Facebook community for a one-time price of only a few hundred dollars, depending on the package you choose.

Frank keeps the course updated too. He recently came out with a major 2.0 update to Savage Affiliates, adding the latest strategies and techniques for success.

When it comes down to it, Savage Affiliates provides much more training material and a community that’s just as helpful for a much more economical cost.

3. It teaches you to be independent.

This goes back to what I said about Wealthy Affiliate teaching you to be dependent on their own platform.

Yes, Wealthy Affiliate tends to your hosting needs so you don’t need to use an external host, and they also provide a keyword research tool. The downside to this convenience is that it keeps you subscribed to their platform and it discourages you from exploring better tools and hosting elsewhere.

Savage Affiliates, on the other hand, teaches you how to go out there on your own and get the tools you need, not relying on any one platform or service. This is what a truly successful online businessperson should be able to do.

I found one of the major weaknesses of Wealthy Affiliate to be that it doesn’t give you the big picture of online marketing. Savage Affiliates does.

Savage Affiliates Bonuses

Wealthy Affiliate is a good platform that provides affiliate marketing training, a helpful community, and some other cool features.

Unfortunately, it has some pretty big problems that, in my view, don’t make it viable for smart marketers to be a Premium member for the long term. Once you take the training, it’s not really worth the monthly membership fee anymore.

And at this point, I’m really put off by the fact that support has ignored my complaints about the daily spam messages they are sending to my email. How many other people do they ignore?

Instead of Wealthy Affiliate, the affiliate marketing training that I would recommend is Savage Affiliates.
